The side plank is an outstanding exercise to improve core stability and decrease your overall risk for low back injury. In fact, decreased side plank endurance is associated with low back injury on the side of weakness! So, this is truly a preventive exercise, and is something we all should be doing with regularity. The side plank is typically performed isometrically, meaning that there is no movement of the body during the repetition, however, this particular variation adds dynamic rotation, thereby increasing the overall difficulty of the exercise and challenging more muscle groups. This variation, while more difficult, is considered to be more functional as we don't live our lives isometrically, rather we are in constant movement in various planes.
